Dear friends,

I am excited to invite you to our first chamber concert of the new year with a quite unusual program. We present true masterworks by unknown composers whose musical heritage was overshadowed by their illustrious colleagues and definitely deserves to be discovered, although most of us probably never heard their names before. Austrian-American composer Erich Zeisl, whose daughter married Arnold Schoenberg's son, wrote his cello sonata in Los Angeles in 1950. Yet it sounds late romantic and rhapsodic, with a touch of Hollywood. It will be followed by the string trio by French naval admiral Jean Cras, a talented impressionist composer inspired by his sea travels. This trio could easily go for a work by his famous French colleague Maurice Ravel. The concert's big finale will be a romantic, almost symphonic piano quartet by German-Jewish composer Robert Kahn, who was a well respected friend of Brahms. Some of his works are still not published or available in print. It looks like this will be at least a Californian premiere of a work written in 1899.

Apart from the two concerts in Piedmont and Walnut Creek, a special experimental event around the Cras trio was organized by our violist Deanna for the following weekend in San Francisco. We hope that you can make it to one of the upcoming shows and look forward to seeing you.

Musically yours,
Karsten & friends
